QUICK INTERVENTION BY THE GENDARMES AFTER THE ACCIDENT
The first to intervene after the accident were ultimately the gendarmes from Castelnaudary, who were able to provide first aid before the arrival of the firefighters and their colleagues from Bram. For this accident, no less than six ambulances from different emergency centers in Lauragais, three units from Smur de l’Aude, Haute-Garonne and Tarn were mobilized. Traffic was obviously interrupted on this road until around 7 a.m. to allow rescue operations and care for the victims.
CONSEQUENCES OF THE ACCIDENT
Following the accident, an 18-year-old woman lost her life. Two people were seriously injured, and three others suffered less serious injuries. All were evacuated to hospitals in Carcassonne and the Rangueil University Hospital in Toulouse. One of the passengers miraculously survived without injury, but found himself deeply traumatized. He will be questioned by the police as soon as possible. All the occupants were from Lauragais. Squadron leader Adrien Santarelli from Carcassonne highlights the persistent problem of road safety: “Driving is still as much of a problem, even if we are very attentive to it.”
ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS
The commander also mentioned the possibility that the young people were returning from a drunken evening: “They are local young people who were certainly returning from a slightly too drunken evening… We will see what the investigation will determine.” The authorities took toxicological samples from the driver and his friends: “Toxicological samples were taken, and they are being analyzed…”. The investigation carried out by the Castelnaudary gendarmerie is therefore ongoing. So far, in 2024, nine people have already been victims of fatal accidents on the roads of Aude, a terrible toll which risks increasing as the months progress and summer approaches.
