DIY Mosquito Trap: An Effective Natural Solution to Eliminate Mosquitoes

Enjoy Mosquito-Free Nights with This Simple Homemade Trap

Summer is synonymous with warm nights, outdoor fun, and unfortunately, mosquitoes. But fear not, a simple, natural mosquito trap can provide relief without the use of harsh chemicals. With ingredients you likely already have at home, you can easily create an effective mosquito-catching device using the power of fermentation.

Ingredients and Tools Needed:

  • 200 ml of water

  • 50 grams of brown sugar

  • 1 gram of brewer’s yeast

  • An empty 2-liter soda bottle

  • Knife or scissors

  • Tape

Steps to Create Your Mosquito Trap:

  1. Prepare the Bottle:

    • Cut the soda bottle in half, just above the middle. You’ll use the top half as a funnel that fits into the bottom half.

  2. Make the Syrup:

    • Boil the water and dissolve the brown sugar in it. Once dissolved, allow the syrup to cool to below 30°C (86°F). Speed up cooling by placing it in the fridge for a few minutes.

  3. Mix the Yeast:

    • Pour the cooled syrup into the lower half of the bottle. Add the brewer’s yeast into the syrup without stirring. The yeast will begin fermenting, releasing carbon dioxide—what attracts the mosquitoes.

  4. Assemble the Trap:

    • Invert the top half of the bottle and insert it into the bottom half. Secure the connection with tape to prevent mosquitoes from escaping.
