Rodents, these small, agile and sometimes invasive creatures, are often considered scourge in our homes and gardens. In addition to the property damage they cause, they can also transmit various pathogens that are dangerous to humans and pets. Among the most common rodents are rats and mice, which often sneak into our homes and seek shelter and food.
Identify rodents: rat or mouse?
Rats tend to breed in urban, suburban, and agricultural areas. There are black and brown rats, which usually weigh less than 500 grams. They like attics, basements, and the surrounding areas of homes. Mice, on the other hand, are smaller, grayish or brown in color, and hide in secluded and convenient places in the house.
Why are they invading our homes?
When temperatures drop, rodents take refuge in our homes in groups in search of food and warmth. Their keen sense of smell allows them to recognize all kinds of foods found in our kitchens and homes. They feed on bread, flour, cereals, sweets and even pet food. Their habitat is often made up of plastic or paper bags, which they transform into nests of about 15 to 20 cm in diameter, hidden behind refrigerators, under sofas, near radiators or even under beds.
